Coco Chanel

The Revolutionary Minimalist

Coco Chanel (1883–1971) is arguably the most iconic name in fashion history. Born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, she revolutionized women’s fashion by introducing simplicity and comfort to a world of restrictive corsets and extravagant dresses. Chanel opened her first boutique in 1910 and quickly became known for her hats, but it was her introduction of casual elegance that truly redefined women’s style.

In 1925, Chanel unveiled the now-legendary Chanel suit—an elegant, streamlined design that featured a collarless jacket and a slim skirt. Chanel also popularized the “little black dress,” a symbol of timeless style that remains a staple in women’s wardrobes today. Her designs offered a sense of freedom and mobility, promoting garments that allowed women to feel both powerful and comfortable.

At her 1969 Collection Presentation, Chanel famously remarked, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”
