The First Fashion Queen
Jeanne Paquin (1869–1936) was a pioneering force in haute couture. As one of the first women to own and operate a major fashion house, her influence in Paris at the turn of the 20th century was unparalleled. Paquin opened her maison de couture in 1891, and by doing so, she challenged the male-dominated fashion world. She became known for her innovative use of colors and materials, breaking away from traditional muted palettes to create dresses that were rich in color and texture.

Paquin was also one of the first designers to use fashion shows as a form of marketing, hosting extravagant runway shows with live models. Her designs were a fusion of elegance and practicality, often incorporating lighter fabrics and bolder designs. She became an international fashion sensation, expanding her house to London, New York, and Buenos Aires.
