Yarniverse

An app created to teach people how to crochet.

Project Overview

  • Category: UX Design
  • Class: INLS 382: Information Systems Analysis & Design
  • Project date: January 2024 - May 2024

Step 1

The first step was to collaborate with my team to decide on the purpose, objectives, and scope of the project.

Purpose

After the support and success of the Instagram account @crochetfrogsunc, an account dedicated to spreading joy throughout UNC's campus by leaving crocheted frogs for students to find, my team and I wanted to create an easy-to-use, accessible mobile app to teach people how to crochet.

Objectives

Our main objective was to create an app that progresses with the user, guiding the user from complete novice to crochet pro.

Scope

As this was a semester-long class project, our professor, Dr. Urquhart, defined our project deliverables and due dates. As such, the project focuses on a mobile app experience with an accompanying write up and video.

Step 2

The next step was to better understand the potential users of our application. We did this by creating two user personas, representing both the novice and experienced user.

Step 3

The following step was to create the workplan, feasibility analysis, requirement definition, and questionnaire. These materials were divided up amongst our team, and with the addition of the project summary and personas comprised the write up for this project, which you can read below.

Step 4

Finally, it was time to create the wireframes of our app! Per a recommendation from Dr. Urquhart we used Balsamiq Wireframes to create our prototype. Per our project instructions, we created three different scenarios that users would be most likely to use. We decided to create scenarios for: a beginner user learning how to crochet for the first time, an intermediate user following a stitch guide to create their own project, and an advanced user who has the knowledge and means to search and filter projects that they want to complete. After completion, I created a video to explain our project, the basic premises, and walk through the three scenarios we created.

Final Takeaways

UX/UI design is more than creating beautiful wireframes!
After completing my first full UX design project, I realized that while the wireframes are what you present to the consumer, it is the work beforehand—the personas you create, the questions you ask, and the research you complete that make or break your project. Going forward, I know to dedicate the same amount of time and care to these aspects as the app design itself. Plus a special shoutout to the rest of my team Grace Cleveland and Evan Parke!
